WELCOME TO RIVERGATE PRIMARY

Our Environment

Rivergate Primary School is a new community school that opened its doors in 2023. At Rivergate Primary School we strive to lay a solid foundation for life-long learning that will enable our learners to contribute meaningfully to society as a whole.

Learn By Doing

Our focus is on creating a stimulating, balanced and stable environment in which learners can not only master reading in English and Afrikaans, but also with meaning, which will enable them to reach their potential.

A values based education system is in place to bring about learning while in school and serving their communities when they leave.

A Word

From Our Principal

Rivergate Primary School was opened in January 2023 with 37 learners and five teachers. This number increased steadily until December 2023, when there were just over 100 learners. 2023 was a very challenging year for the school as the acting principal had to go back to her school for term 3, and then she was forced to leave the school in November 2023 due to ill health. It was at this point that I was approached to be the curator principal until a permanent principal could be appointed. I unofficially started at the school in December 2023 to assist the teachers to plan for the 2024 school year.

January 2024 saw a huge influx of learners which has grown the school to over 300 learners. The school will continue to grow in the coming years. Currently, the school has classes from grades 1 to 4. 2025 will see the introduction of grade 5, and the school will grow annually by one grade until all grades, up to grade 7, are in place.

Phase 1 of the school buildings, the Foundation Phase classrooms, was completed in 2023, while school was taking place! Phase 2A was also completed, but no further building has taken place as yet in 2024. We hope that Phase 2B will be completed this year.

The school caters to the Rivergate Valley, Pioneer Valley and the Parklands North areas predominantly. Although not zoned for these areas, learners from these areas get preference when applying, as per the Admissions Policy.

The learners are a wonderful mix of children from different backgrounds, cultures and languages who all play together wonderfully without any consideration of their possible differences. They enjoy playing different games, with soccer being a firm favourite, during breaks and after school. Singing seems to bring all the children together as one. They all sing beautifully, and we hope to start a choir in the near future.

While the school still has minimal resources, every effort is made to introduce the learners to various things that will enhance their learning. As many of the learners are not English Home Language speakers, the school’s main academic focus is on literacy to ensure all learners are able to learn in English, while also focusing on mathematical skills.

We are a small, but very busy school! In all that we do, the learners are at the forefront of each decision.
